Sherry Garlick Stanton (Great-granddaughter of John Garlick)

The author, Sherry Garlick Stanton, describes her great-grandfather’s arrival in Cape Town in 1872 from Lincolnshire, England, at the age of 22, how he built up his business as well as his many political and other interests, from cars and typewriters to horticulture. We meet some of the characters who were Garlick’s contemporaries, his Scottish-Canadian wife, and their children. In presenting a detailed picture of how Garlick and his associates developed the business, his family life, and many contemporaries Stanton offers her readers a rich and colourful social history of early 20th century South Africa
