DATE: MONDAY 22 NOVEMBER 2021

VENUE: CATHOLIC CHURCH HALL, EASTCLIFF, HERMANUS

TIME: 16.00

SPEAKER: ANGELA HESLOP

THE HISTORY OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN RED CROSS AND, IN PARTICULAR, THE WORK OF THE HERMANUS RED CROSS

Angela Heslop is a volunteer in Hermanus Red Cross and became involved in 2000 and has been the chairperson since 2005. She was invited to join Red Cross by an acquaintance whilst Angela was donating blood and who knew that she had been a nurse in the NHS in England and had, more recently, practised in Cape Town both as a teacher in Groote Schuur Hospital and managing home-based care. Angela was new to Hermanus, and she considered that this opportunity would assist her in getting to know the community.

As a member of Hermanus History Society, she will share the history of the local Red Cross, now 65 years old and contextualise this in the broader history of the Red Cross, which has a worldwide role.

Angela has worked in ten organisations concerned with health and education and believes that Hermanus has enormous potential, both in people and place. However, there is much work to be done.

This meeting will be the final meeting of 2021 and will not be available on Zoom or Youtube. The Committee is meeting on 24 November to decide on the programme for 2022 and details will be sent to you early in December.
