Final Newsletter for 2019

Members of the Hermanus History Society have been working with others to produce a really top class introduction to Hermanus, aimed at tourists, and people visiting family or friends. It contains the best photographs of aspects of the town that I have ever seen. I am sending a scan of the front cover. Copies may be bought from The Book Cottage at R250”. Robin Lee

On 13 December we lodged our objection to a proposal to add another storey on 28 High Street which would contravene the Municipality’s own maximum permissible height for buildings. We also objected to the fact that the additions were not for business purposes but for accommodation. The building is in a business only zone. If you would like a copy of the objection, please email me (robinlee@hermanus.co.za) and I will send you the document.

Thanks to all members who attended the launch of my book on 12 December. Attendance was 63, but we sold 74 copies at the special discounted price of R220. Further copies are available at The Book Cottage and Hemingways Bookshop at retail prices.

Your Society has undertaken a research project on the implementation of apartheid in Hermanus since 1950. A group of volunteers has been formed and information already collected. The work will begin officially on 1 January 2020. We will keep members informed throughout the process.

I am starting on my fifth and final book on Hermanus history in January, and I am looking for a research assistant who is computer literate, has a cell phone with a camera and can tolerate some repetitive work. I will pay the local going rate for this type of work. Please think of a young person who would like to earn some money for studies in 2020 and contact me.
